Introducing VSHIFT
FAQ
Are Density batteries solid state?
Density batteries use advanced solid-state architectures. Rather than applying one battery architecture to every product, we use application-variable solid-state architectures, balancing performance, energy density, cycle life, safety and cost for the requirements of each product. We use an acronym for tihis approach - XSSB. As there is no globally accepted definition of a solid-state battery, our architectures are independantly tested confirming no free flowing liquid.
What does Density mean by solid state?
There is currently no single industry-wide definition of a solid-state battery. Definitions and architectures vary significantly between manufacturers. Density focuses on the physical construction and independently tested performance of our cells, rather than relying solely on terminology.
Do Density solid-state batteries contain liquid electrolyte?
Cells independently tested by Deakin University were disassembled and assessed for the presence of liquid electrolyte, with no liquid observed. We use independent testing to validate our technology and substantiate the performance and construction claims we make.
How can different battery technologies all be called solid state?
Solid-state is a broad and evolving category, and different manufacturers apply their own definitions of when a battery is described as solid-state or semi-solid-state. Some, for example, disclose around 10% liquid electrolyte while still considering the resulting architecture predominantly solid.
Density takes a different approach. We use X-SSB as the umbrella acronym for our application-variable solid-state battery architecture. Rather than defining X-SSB by an arbitrary percentage, we select the cathode, anode and electrolyte system best suited to each application, based on the required balance of energy density, cycle life, cost and performance, while maintaining safety as a fundamental requirement. We rely on independent testing to verify the physical characteristics and performance of our cells. In testing of the cell used in our 5K by Deakin University, the cell was disassembled and examined for the presence of liquid, with no liquid observed. Across our X-SSB architectures, a key requirement is no free-flowing liquid electrolyte on puncture. This approach allows Density to select different cell chemistries and architectures for different applications without suggesting that every Density product uses an identical cell chemistry or construction, or that every X-SSB chemistry is all-sold-state.
Density up to and exceeding 550Wh/Kg. Battery cells independently tested by Deakin University, Melbourne.
