The DENSITY X2 PowerDrive 1600 rethinks the traditional vehicle dual-battery system. Instead of building around separate batteries, DC-DC chargers, solar controllers and multiple voltage converters, PowerDrive combines 1.6kWh of X2 XSSB energy storage with intelligent multi-voltage power management in one compact platform. Run high-power 48V equipment alongside conventional 12V accessories, connect solar, charge from your vehicle and manage external batteries without building an increasingly complicated electrical system. At approximately 12kg and only 98mm high, PowerDrive is designed for 4WDs, touring vehicles, campers, marine and mobile applications where space, weight and power matter.
PowerDrive is built around a 48V architecture for efficient high-power energy delivery while still providing the 12V power required by conventional vehicle accessories. Its 1.6kWh X2 XSSB battery can deliver up to 3.6kW at 48V or 1.2kW at 12V, allowing one compact system to support everything from lighting, refrigeration and electronics to significantly higher-power equipment. Integrated charging accepts up to 800W, while solar input supports up to 1,000W. The result is a power system that can move substantially more energy without relying on the heavy cabling and high currents associated with doing everything at 12V.
At the centre of PowerDrive is VSHIFT, Density's intelligent multi-voltage DC power platform. VSHIFT gives you adjustable DC operation across 10–60V, allowing PowerDrive to work with different vehicle, battery and accessory architectures instead of locking the installation to a single voltage. Dual Battery Mode integrates PowerDrive into conventional vehicle systems, while selectable external-battery charging and reverse charging provide additional flexibility for AGM, lead-acid and LFP battery installations. Integrated MPPT solar charging, system monitoring and intelligent power management bring functions that would traditionally require several separate components together into one modular Density platform.
PowerDrive is designed to become the DC heart of a vehicle power system. It can charge from a compatible vehicle electrical system, accept solar through its integrated MPPT input, supply conventional 12V loads directly, deliver high-power 48V DC and interface with compatible external batteries. Dual Battery Mode allows integration with an existing starter-battery system using an external VSR for starter isolation, while configurable charging supports 12/24V lead or AGM batteries and 12/24/36/48V LFP systems. Add PowerGen when 240V AC power is required, or use PowerDrive independently as a compact DC-only system for installations that don't need an inverter.

What is PowerDrive designed to replace?
PowerDrive is designed to simplify conventional vehicle power systems by combining 1.6kWh of X2 XSSB battery storage, multi-voltage DC power, solar charging and intelligent power management into one compact platform. It can reduce the number of separate batteries, chargers, converters and controllers normally required in a touring or mobile power installation.
Can PowerDrive run both 12V and 48V equipment?
Yes. PowerDrive is built around an efficient 48V architecture while providing dedicated 12V power up to 100A for conventional vehicle accessories. This lets you run traditional 12V equipment alongside higher-power 48V devices from the same battery platform.
What is VSHIFT?
VSHIFT is Density's intelligent multi-voltage DC power system. It allows PowerDrive to work across a wide 10–60V range, giving you considerably more flexibility than a conventional fixed-voltage battery system. Why use 48V instead of a conventional 12V system?
For the same amount of power, a 48V system operates at approximately one-quarter of the current of a 12V system. This can reduce cable size, electrical losses and the extremely high currents associated with running powerful equipment at 12V, while PowerDrive still provides 12V for conventional accessories.
How much power can PowerDrive deliver?
PowerDrive can deliver up to 3.6kW at 48V and up to 1.2kW at 12V, making it suitable for everything from lighting, refrigeration and USB devices through to substantially higher-power DC equipment.
Can PowerDrive be used as a dual-battery system?
Yes. Dual Battery Mode allows PowerDrive to integrate with a vehicle starter-battery system while supplying your accessory loads independently. An external VSR (50A included, upgrade to 100A Max as required) is used for starter-battery isolation so your accessories don't discharge the vehicle's starting battery.
Can PowerDrive charge from my alternator?
Yes. PowerDrive lets you adjust alternator charging from 20A to 100A directly from the touchscreen or Density Link app. With conventional dual-battery systems, changing vehicles or upgrading your alternator can mean replacing the DC-DC charger to achieve a different charging rate. With PowerDrive, simply change the charge current to suit your vehicle or alternator — 20A today, 100A tomorrow, without changing the charger.
Can I connect solar directly to PowerDrive?
Yes. PowerDrive includes integrated MPPT solar charging with up to 500W solar input, allowing compatible solar panels to connect directly without requiring a separate external solar controller. Ensure connected solar panels are 13-60V Max. If you have multiple PowerDrive batteries, you can connect multiple panels.
Can PowerDrive charge another battery?
Yes. PowerDrive can be configured to support external battery charging, including 12V/24V lead-acid or AGM batteries and 12V/24V/36V/48V LFP systems, making it useful for more complex vehicle and mobile power installations.
What is Reverse Charge?
Reverse Charge allows PowerDrive to exchange energy with a compatible external battery system rather than operating only as a conventional one-way charger. This provides additional flexibility when PowerDrive is integrated into a multi-battery installation.
Do I need PowerGen to use PowerDrive?
No. PowerDrive can operate independently as a powerful DC energy system. Add PowerGen 3600 when you also need 240V AC power. Keeping the battery and inverter modular means you can build the system around your actual requirements.
Can I expand my PowerDrive system?
Yes. PowerDrive is designed as part of a modular power platform, allowing compatible PowerDrive batteries and Density components to be combined as your energy and power requirements grow.
